My friend is taking a photography class and I went out with him to mess around taking pictures at night. I didn’t have any film with me and nowhere else was open, so I ran into CVS and picked up a store brand roll.
He ended up having to leave early because he had class the next morning, so I spent most of the night just cruising around my town alone, finishing the roll. I love the feeling of driving and walking through mostly empty streets and being able to just think.  hamburgerstastegood:

Whenever I walk into a public bathroom with a new pair of shoes I’m always like “damn I guess I can’t lick the soles of these anymore”

I haven’t read the Harry Potter books in awhile, but is there any type of formal orientation? I feel like every school I’ve attended they forced me to sit through long boring lectures about campus life and how to register for classes online and handed me endless brochures about clubs and the health center and library policies. If I remember correctly Hogwarts was like, here’s a short tour and a redheaded guy and smart girl to handle 90% of the exposition, good luck not being killed by the endless supply of dangerous shit hiding behind every corner.

QuestionDo you honestly believe that "gaming industry doesn't represent women" nonsense? Because Thunderf00t debunked that. In fact, I think he's had an easier time with debunking feminazis than he has creationist Christians... which is kind of sad. Why not just do research on feminism if you want material for your blog? Are you joking???

Edit: I’m trying to get through one of his videos “deconstructing” an Anita Sarkeesian video and he’s refuting research that people internalize effects of violent video games by saying that since there was no rise in homicide rates that games have zero effect on people’s psyche?? Because homicide rates are clearly the only measure of the effects of violence in media and assault/rape/abuse statistics don’t factor in at all. And let’s not even look at psychological effects.

This has been researched for a long time and what was found is that video games actually provide a form of “stress relief”, reducing violent behavior, rape, assault and abuse included. Anita’s ideas have been propagated since the 90’s, when it was trendy to paint violent video games in a negative light. This was back before they had the ESRB rating system and has been talked about ever since Mortal Kombat 1 (which was either the first ultra-gorey video game ever made or close to it) was released for the Sega Genesis. Back in that era, video games were mostly innocent and cartoonish: http://youtu.be/PuwJLhSM_FY

Really because we studied this in a psychology course I took and the “stress relief” effect is false. Engaging in aggressive behaviors (either in video games or through sports) only increases a tendency for more aggressive behavior.

Plus, when did Anita Sarkeesian ever call for the banning of games or claim that they directly caused violence? The whole “video games don’t directly cause violence” argument sets an absurdly low bar for something gamers supposedly love and consider art .

As a cultural critic, Anita Sarkeesian is examining video games and how they exist within and may contribute to a larger culture that has a huge problem with gendered and sexual violence. If anything Sarkeesian is taking video games seriously in a way that so-called gamers have been calling for for ages. She’s critically deconstructing them on more than a superficial level, much like someone would treat traditional art or literature. If video games want to be respected as an art form, they need to welcome the same kind of scrutiny. You don’t see people  sending death and rape threats when someone publishes a new critical essay examining an Elizabeth Barrett Browning poem through a feminist lens. Then why does it happen time and time again with video games?

None of these people criticizing Sarkeesian ever address her actual criticism, or respect or acknowledge her enough to even realize what she’s doing. They can’t look past their own, petty, misogynist anger to realize there’s an established precedent for this type of criticism. I mean seriously, if you’re ever on the same side of an issue as the people sending death and rape threats, you should really reconsider your position.

Any word on you gettin’ your ass to the city on the real?
The City? Like SF? Probably soon, I was just there last week. Haha for real though, I’ve been applying to places and I was really close to getting an internship, but it fell through cause of some college credit complications. I have another lead that will hopefully pan out soon, if not I might have to stay here. I just signed up for 101 at UCB starting October 8th, so I definitely planning on getting over there.

Most of my friends have moved out of town again for college, so there’s a lot less to do around here. I was worried I wouldn’t have anything to do tonight, but then I look up to realize I’ve wasted 4 hours researching Joshi wrestlers, watching videos of Pixies playing live, editing photos and analyzing Los Campesinos! lyrics. Basically I’m saying, who needs friends when you’re a massive fucking nerd?
